Appointments & Referrals
Do I need a referral to see a surgeon?
Yes. A referral from your GP (valid for 12 months) or specialist (valid for 3 months) is required to see our surgeons. This also will ensure you receive the Medicare rebate on your consultation fee.
How do I make an appointment?
New Patients: We usually receive your referral directly from your practitioner and will be in touch with you within 2-3 business days once this has been triaged.
However, if you have not heard from us, please call our rooms on 02 4961 6355 or email reception@newcastlesurgical.com.au to ensure your referral has been received.
Subsequent Appointments: If you are a previous patient and are having an urgent issue, please call our rooms on 02 4961 6355 to chat to our friendly reception team to arrange an appropriate appointment.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring your referral letter, Medicare card, Private Health Insurance details, and any relevant test results or imaging.
Can I get a second opinion?
Yes, our surgeons are happy to provide second opinions.
Surgery & Care
What types of surgery do you provide?
We specialise in oncoplastic (cancer) breast surgery, skin cancer and other benign skin lesions, general surgical procedures, as well as endoscopy services and more.
What is oncoplastic breast surgery?
Oncoplastic surgery combines breast cancer surgery with plastic surgery techniques to help preserve the shape of the breast.
Do you offer breast reconstruction?
Yes. We provide a full range of immediate and delayed breast reconstruction options, tailored to each patient’s needs.
Will I meet my surgeon before surgery?
Yes. Your surgeon will discuss your treatment plan in detail, answer questions, and ensure you are comfortable before your operation.
What support is available after surgery?
Our practice nurse provides dedicated breast care support throughout your entire treatment process, and together with our administration staff, work closely with the hospital teams and community services to ensure ongoing care.
Costs & Billing
What are the costs of surgery?
Your surgery costs will vary depending on your procedure, health fund, and hospital. Our practice refers to the Australian Medical Association’s (AMA) Fees List as a guideline for our billing costs as well as the MediGap scheme for procedures. We will provide a written estimate and informed financial consent before your surgery.
Will I have out-of-pocket expenses?
In many cases, yes. Out-of-pocket costs vary depending on your health fund and level of cover. Our team will explain this clearly before your procedure.
Can I claim through Medicare or Private Health Insurance?
Yes. Medicare and Private Health Insurance rebates may apply. We will give you the information you need to make a claim.
Anaesthetic & Hospital Care
Who provides my anaesthetic care?
Your specialist anaesthetist will provide safe, tailored anaesthetic care. You will be provided with their information prior to surgery and your anaesthetist will contact you directly.
Which hospitals do you operate at?
Our surgeons operate at Calvary Mater Newcastle, Lingard Private, Lake Macquarie Private, Warners Bay Private, Maitland Private, Newcastle Private, Belmont District Hospital and Cessnock Public Hospital.
How long will I stay in hospital?
This depends on your procedure. Your surgeon will discuss expected recovery and hospital stay with you before surgery.
